UK SCALE Centre
Building momentum for supply chain leadership.
When the UK SCALE Centre was established, as part of the prestigious MIT Global SCALE Network and based at Loughborough University, the ambition was clear and the opportunity was significant. But the story was still taking shape.
Created to help the UK act as a global leader in supply chain innovation and transformation, the Centre sat at a powerful intersection of research, industry, learning and policy. Yet without a clear positioning, its role was difficult to define, its value hard to articulate, and its momentum harder still to build.
Rbl was engaged to define a clear, confident and coherent brand narrative. One that could engage industry leaders, inspire learners, influence policymakers, and create a platform built to lead.
Insight
While the Centre’s founding ambition was bold, the strategic foundations beneath it were still emerging. Messaging lacked the clarity and distinction needed to achieve visibility and differentiate it from established supply chain institutions, consultancies and research initiatives.
A comprehensive discovery phase, including interviews with Centre leadership, academics, industry professionals, and global SCALE partners, surfaced a clear set of insights that would shape the brand strategy.
First, volatility had become the defining context. Political, economic and social disruption, from geopolitical conflict to climate pressures and supply shocks, had turned supply chains into a daily concern for leaders. Almost everyone we spoke with expressed the same urgent need: for greater clarity, foresight and practical solutions to navigate constant complexity.
Second, while belief ran deep internally, shared articulation did not. There was a strong sense of purpose across the team, but no collective expression for what the Centre stood for, the capabilities on offer, or why it mattered now. This made it difficult for audiences to quickly understand the Centre’s role or value, and harder still to confidently claim leadership in national and global conversations. The critical connection to the MIT Global SCALE Network, and the credibility of Loughborough University were also not clearly understood or leveraged.
Third, audience needs were sharply differentiated:
- Industry needed practical partnership, transformation and competitive advantage.
- Learners wanted real-world relevance, future-ready skills and clear career pathways.
- Policymakers sought national capability, collaboration and long-term resilience.
Any brand solution had to work across all three, without becoming vague, diluted or generic.
Ideas
The challenge wasn’t a lack of ambition; it was the absence of a clear connection between ambition and action. Without a tangible identity, the Centre risked remaining abstract or academic, rather than being understood as a catalyst for significant, real-world change.
Working with the team, we articulated the future they wanted to shape and, critically, the role they would play in shaping it. Rather than adding more theory to an already crowded space, or to work in isolation, the Centre’s real value lies in making progress practical: convening organisations to tackle challenges collectively; creating the conditions to navigate complexity; turning insight into practice; and building capability where it matters most.
If the Centre exists to bridge the gap between research and reality, skills and industry, ambition and delivery, then this is the strategic territory the brand needs to own. It also serves to clarify the Centre’s unique advantage: the ability to bring together MIT’s global authority with Loughborough’s deep UK expertise and industrial connections, an interrelationship that underpins both its credibility and impact.
The strategic bridge between long-term futures and real-world action led directly to a clear and confident proposition:
Smarter Solutions, Stronger Futures
An idea that captures the Centre’s role at the intersection of complex problem-solving and long-term impact. It positions the UK SCALE Centre not simply as a place of research and knowledge, but as a driver of applied solutions, guided by the belief that stronger futures for industry, people and society are built through better decisions today.
Decisions informed by data.
Grounded in real-world experience.
Shaped through collaboration rather than silos.
To ensure relevance and cut-through, we then developed an audience-centric messaging framework built around three thematic territories that reflect the real needs of the sector:
Solving complex challenges | Driving transformation | Strengthening resilience, competitiveness and value
Each territory was translated into clear content pillars, key messages and proof points for industry, learners and policymakers, enabling consistent communication while tailoring to specific needs.
Impact
The result is a brand built for the moment the Centre is operating in. One that responds directly to the pressures facing modern supply chains, while clearly articulating the role the UK SCALE Centre can play in helping organisations navigate them.
The work has given the Centre a stronger platform from which to lead, convene and influence. A more cohesive and assured brand presence has strengthened credibility with senior industry partners, supported the launch of new initiatives and created greater confidence in how the Centre communicates its value and ambition.
The work delivered:
- A coherent brand narrative rooted in belief, ambition and real-world impact, creating stronger alignment across the team through a shared language focused on resilience, productivity and sustainability.
- A clear and confident positioning that elevates the Centre beyond a university-based research institution to a national convener for supply chain innovation and transformation, with a distinctive role within the MIT Global SCALE network.
- A stronger and more explicit connection to both Loughborough University and MIT, reinforcing the Centre’s authority, reach and international relevance.
- A clearly defined offer that bridges insight and practice through specialist research, leading-edge programmes and real-world collaboration.
- Audience-led messaging that makes this offer more specific, accessible and relevant, connecting learning, industry transformation and policy outcomes.
- A clearer platform for growth, visibility and strategic engagement, helping support initiatives including the Supply Chain Futures Forum and Symposium 2026.
To bring the strategy to life, we developed a high-impact brand film and visual identity that demonstrate how the Centre connects expertise, innovation and learning to create future-ready solutions and drive purposeful progress across the UK and beyond.
With a clearer story, a more confident voice and a compelling proposition, the UK SCALE Centre is now better equipped to engage partners, inspire collaboration and lead the conversations shaping the future of supply chains. The result is not simply a stronger brand, but a stronger platform for the Centre’s next phase of growth and impact.

“What this work enabled was clarity. Not just in how the UK SCALE Centre is presented, but in how we articulate our role as an applied academic institution operating at the intersection of research, industry and policy. The brand strategy captures the essence of what we are trying to achieve: translating academic insight into practical, collaborative solutions that help organisations navigate complexity and build long-term resilience. It provides a strong foundation for impact, engagement and growth.”
Professor Jan Godsell, Director of UK SCALE Centre and Dean of Loughborough Business School
